Happy to be part of WOMEX this year! It felt amazing to take over stand #248 and put our hearts and souls to present Ukraine. It was great to greet everyone who came over to say hi, learn more about Ukrainian world music, talk to our artists and managers and build more plans for prospective collaborations! Thank you, European Broadcasting Union - EBU for the invitation to do the presentation on the Ukrainian music industry to the editors and journalists of the major public speaking companies on the continent. We were overwhelmed by the amount of support and kind words we have got!

Thank you to Ukrainian artist Daria Leleko for showing the real beauty of the Ukrainian bandura and singing Ukrainian folk songs in front of well-respected European media stakeholders. Thank you to world-known journalist and world-music lover Daniel Rosenberg for doing another great presentation of the unique talks and stories of the Ukrainian artists. Without a doubt, thank you Balaklava Blues for powerful performance - both at showcase part, and our exhibition stand!
Program organized by Music Export Ukraine and Ukrainian Institute:

  • 19-23.10 Ukraine - Stand 248 at Altice Arena. Exhibition “Ukrainian Jazzmen at War” (Ukrainian stand #248). The photo project aimed to tell the stories of jazz musicians who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Territorial Defence. Among them were such famous musicians as Volodymyr Likhoshva, Olexander Lebedenko, Mark Tokar, Danylo Vinarikov, Oleksander Remez and others. The project presented photos of the musicians: the one from their pre-war life featuring their active concert and festival activities, the other one from their current military life. Concert photos were taken by professional jazz photographers, those from the war – by the militaries. While exploring the history of each musician, attendees could also listen to their music via QR codes on their music resources. The project was initiated by the Ukrainian Institute and was produced in partnership with Jazzography.in.ua.
  • 20.10, 11:30-12:45. Film screening “ROSES. Film-cabaret, Film Room at Altice Arena, directed by Irena Stetsenko. Duration 78’ | Ukrainian, Russian, English with English subtitles.
  • BALAKLAVA BLUES concert 22:30 @ PARQUE MAYER | OFF-WOMEX STAGE. Ukrainian traditional music reflects the experience of the tragedy of war over the course of the past thousand years. The band draws on that beautiful expression of tragedy and the more recent collective experience and tries to make it a source of strength and unity for others. As for the band’s name, balaclavas have been part of the Ukrainian zeitgeist since the 2014 revolution. They’re meant to conceal, but when the band has them on they feel more exposed and vulnerable. Balaclavas hide the face, but they expose the soul.
  • 21.10, 15:00-16:00, CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPEAN NETWORKING SESSION. Coordinated by Martyna van Nieuwland (Poland), Katowice City of Gardens; András Lelkes (Hungary), Hangvető with Alona Dmukhovska (Ukraine), Music Export Ukraine; Mariana Bondarenko (Ukraine), Ukranian Institute. On 24 February 2022 the world changed. Russian aggression towards Ukraine has been a tragedy for the cultural heritage and life of Ukrainian artists. During the session we will discuss the situation and role of Central and Eastern European countries during the war and how we can support Ukrainian musicians and institutions, with speakers representing Ukrainian Institute and Music Export Ukraine.
  • 22.10, 17:00-18:00. Central and Eastern European Reception at WOMEX 2022. All the important companies, export offices and some musicians of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine invited international guests for a chat and networking.
